A Journey to Independence
For the first six months of a joey koala’s life development occurs in the mother’s pouch. Once the joey emerges from the pouch it begins the process of switching from drinking milk to eating Eucalyptus leaves.
Around one year old, koalas become independent from their mothers. From around 18 months to three years of age, koalas reach sexual maturity and are ready to find a mate.
To see this species in the wild, we suggest Mt Gravatt Conservation Reserve, Queensland.
